Faux Stone Address Block

I want to replace my lame address block over the garage. It is old and cheap and not even up to code. Code requires 4" high numbers, in both the back and front of the house. The old ones are 3" high. The goal is to make something that looks like the nice stone (well, concrete) address block built in...

Just a couple easy steps with a hair dryer1. Plan on doing label in about 2 steps or about 1.5 inches at a time2. Start pealing corner of label manually3. Heat the first 1-2 inches of label with hair dryer on high heat4. Peal label until you feel a grab from adhesive5. Reheat rest of label and peal off remainder6. If there is any residual glue, it will come off easily with a cloth and mineral oil

– Mr. Money Mustache (AKA Pete Adeney)Mr. Money Mustache (@mrmoneymustache — Pete Adeney in real life) grew up in Canada in a family of mostly eccentric musicians. He graduated with a degree in computer engineering in the 1990s and worked in various tech companies before retiring at age 30. Pete, his wife, and their now eleven-year-old son live near Boulder, Colorado, and have not had real jobs since 2005.This begs the question of “How?” In essence, they accomplished this early retirement by optimizing all aspects of their lifestyle for maximal fun at minimal expense, and by using basic index-fund investing. Their average annual expenses total a mere $25-27,000, and they do not feel in want of anything.Since 2005, all three of them have explored a free-form life of interesting projects, …

A 6502 Retrocomputer In A Very Tidy Package

http://ift.tt/2m6KSkQ

One of the designers whose work we see constantly in the world of retrocomputing is [Grant Searle], whose work on minimal chip count microcomputers has spawned a host of implementations across several processor families.Often a retrocomputer is by necessity quite large, as an inevitable consequence of having integrated circuits in the period-correct dual-in-line packages with 0.1″ spaced pins. Back in the day there were few micros whose PCBs were smaller than a Eurocard (100 mm x 160 mm, 4″ x 6.3″), and many boasted PCBs much larger.[Mark Feldman] though has taken a [Grant Searle] 6502 design and fitted it into a much smaller footprint through ingenious use of two stacked Perf+ prototyping boards. This is a stripboard product that features horizontal traces on one side and vertical on the other, which lends itself to compactness. On top of [Mark]’s computer are the processor and EPROM, while on the lower board are the RAM…

Shape Programmable Matter is More Magnetic Magic

Shape Programmable Matter is More Magnetic Magic

http://ift.tt/2mguWvx

How could you build an artificial tadpole? Or simulate the motion of a cilium? Those would be hard to do with mechanical means — even micromechanical because of their fluid motion. Researchers have been studying shape-programmable matter: materials that can change shape based on something like heat or magnetic field. However, most research in this area has relied on human intuition and trial and error to get the programmed shape correct. They also are frequently not very fast to change shape.[Metin Sitti] and researchers at several institutions have found a way to make rapidly changing silicone rubber parts (PDF link) that can change shape due to a magnetic field. The method is reproducible and doesn’t seem out of reach for a hackerspace or well-equipped garage lab.The paper is full of math, but the basic idea is simple. The math part is determining the magnetization profile required for the shape change required. F…

Is Your Child A Hacker?

http://ift.tt/2mnoI0Q

Parents in Liverpool, UK, are being prepared to spot the signs that their children might be hackers. The Liverpool Echo reports on the launch of a “Hackers To Heroes” scheme targeting youngsters at risk of donning a black hat, and has an expert on hand, one [Vince Warrington], to come up with a handy cut-out-and-keep list. Because you never know when you’re going to need one, and he’s helped the Government so should know what he’s talking about.Of course, they’re talking about “Hacker” (cybercriminal) while for us the word has much more positive connotations. And it’s yet another piece of ill-informed media scaremongering about technology that probably fits like so many others in the “People are having fun. Something Must Be Done About It!” category. But it’s still something that will probably result in hassle for a few youngsters with an interest in technology, and that’s not encouraging. The full list is reproduced below, if you’re a paren…

7 Useful Mods to Upgrade Your Smart Phone Camera

Snapping photos with a phone is fast becoming it’s own subgenre of photography: “iphoneography.” While the cameras in our phones get better and better, there are still some things — macroshots, decent lighting, the perfect selfie angle — that you can’t expect your phone to manage straight out of the box. To help you get some unique shots, here are TK projects to mod your smartphone and experiment with photography.Gobo Arm Camera Phone Stand Overhead shots can be notoriously tricky to get right if you’re holding your camera in your hands. If you’re doing a lot of “Step-by-step” photography, often overhead shots are the easiest way to illustrate a step (trust us, we should know!). This stand will latch onto your workbench allowing you to get your top-down shot without having to juggle your phone, your project, your tools, and allow you to focus on what’s really important: your hand modeling.Inexpensive Digital Microsco…

I don't usually blog about food, but here you go:The next chance you have to visit an Indian grocery, buy yourself a packet of papad (sometimes called papadum, or the phonologic, 'poppers'). They cost about $2 for 10. (my favorite brand) [It turns out that this is a woman-owned company, doing social innovation along the way]...Preheat the oven to 500 degrees and then put them in, one or two at a time, right on the oven rack. They cook in about one minute.Done. (photo

Trump Suggests Anti-Semitic Acts Are Designed to ‘Make People Look Bad’

First "fake news" and now "fake Jews"? "Speaking at the White House to attorneys general from around the country, Mr. Trump was asked by Josh Shapiro, the attorney general of Pennsylvania, about the wave of attacks and how the federal government could work with state governments to confront the violence. “First, he said the acts were reprehensible,” Mr. Shapiro, a Democrat who was elected to the post in November, said while recounting Mr. Trump’s response. “Second he said: ‘And you’ve got to be careful, it could be the reverse. This could be the reverse, trying to make people look bad.’ ”

Non-Electric Bidet Toilet Seat Attachment

Non-Electric Bidet Toilet Seat Attachment

http://ift.tt/2lfnwrs

I discovered the wonder of bidets when I spent 5 months in Japan in the 1980s. When it comes to cleaning, a spray of water is far superior to toilet paper.I always wanted to install a Japanese high tech toilet in my house, but they are pricey. Earlier this year I learned that Amazon sells cold water toilet bidets for about $25. That was cheap enough for me to try. It came in a box with some plastic tubing and an adapter valve that screws onto the threaded nozzle at the bottom of the fill valve. It took about 15 minutes to install. It does the job very well. You can adjust the angle of attack with a lever. You can vary the water pressure with a dial. I use low pressure. If the dial were turned all the way up, I imagine it would flay skin. The downside is that the water is cold. I am used to it. I bought a second one for our other bathroom. This time it took five minutes to install.-- Mark FrauenfelderFresh Water Spray Non-Ele…

On the Milo Bus With the Lost Boys of America’s New Right

"Whether or not these kids deserve a second chance matters far less than whether the rest of us can afford not to give them one. There are millions of them, after all, and not all of them have the strength of character to recognize their wrongdoing and make amends. They are, however, coming to see their mistake. Some part of them believed that this was a game that would end when Trump became president. That was the big boss, the ultimate defeat of liberal social justice snowflakery. But guess what? You don’t get to check out at this level and quit the game and go back and cuddle your cat. Politics is a whole different kind of game, and the stakes are real, and there are no non-player characters. The reason the Lost Boys allow themselves to be stolen away to Neverland is that they want to live somewhere they will never have to grow up. By coincidence, that’s also the reason that a great many people voted to place a spray-tanned authoritarian in the Oval Office. Remember, though, t…

Bondic

Bondic

http://ift.tt/2iPbPup

With a lifetime of making, I have used almost every type of glue and bonding agents. Hot glue has been a big friend during my many years as a professional prop maker. Clear epoxy is a great hard drying and strong adhesive that cures in 5 to 20 minutes. And superglue is super fast!A buddy of mine suggested I might try Bondic, a honey thick plastic welder that solidifies by exposure to UV light and joins wood, plastic, and metal. I purchased the Bondic Starter kit that comes with two 4 gram tubes of liquid plastic and a battery-powered LED UV light. It indeed hardens in a few seconds and is very simple to use. I use it to protect wires coming from soldering points I make — a drop on the spot keeps the wire in place.Warning, Bondic does get very hot while under the UV and during curing. I found out the hard way by testing it on a fingertip.-- Kent BarnesAvailable from Amazon

Hands Free Book Holder Floor Stand

Hands Free Book Holder Floor Stand

http://ift.tt/2kkm3RJ

When I bought a Levo Book Holder Floor Stand more than fifteen years ago (for I think $169), it was an expensive risky purchase for me. However, it has become the best money I’ve ever spent on furniture, office supplies, or any ergonomic product. For the thousands of hours I have spent reading, the Book Holder has saved my neck, shoulders, back, arms, and hands from strain, cramping, and aging. It adjusts to exactly the right height; it can hold the book as close to my eyes as I want; it holds books of almost all sizes; and it’s easy to turn pages. I have only needed the two arms to hold the books, not the straps that can be removed, but would hold the book more securely in some positions. It holds books open so I can photograph the screen. It is very sturdy due to the heavy iron base and solid construction. Unlike a music stand or similar, the floor stand never has to be in front of me, crowding my feet. It can be used from the ri…
