Forensic psychologist says mass killing is about culture, not mental illness

Image
The story is familiar to us today: Somebody, usually a young man, walks into a public place, kills a bunch of people seemingly at random, and (usually) ends the murder spree with a suicide-by-cop.

But this story—at least, in Western culture—is startlingly new, relatively speaking. In fact, Paul Mullen, a forensic psychologist, says we can pin a date and place on the first time it happened. On September 4, 1913, in the German towns of Degerloch and Mühlhausen an der Enz, Ernst August Wagner killed his wife, his children, and at least nine strangers. He shot more than 20 people and set several fires during his killing spree. He ended up spending the rest of his life in an insane asylum.

But when we try to pin killings like these on mental illness, Mullen says, we're not quite hitting the right point. The people who go on killing sprees are mad, sure. But that's not the same thing as diagnosable, objective, physical mental illness. Only about 10% of the people ever arrested for cri…

Survival Bracelets

Image
Here’s the gig. You’re 13. You set up a table to teach others how to create survival bracelets. You say that a bracelet might come in handy in an emergency, such as when you go camping. You charge money for the bracelet and then you show your buyers how to make them. It happens that mothers pay you for the bracelet and you teach their daughters to weave the bracelet. This is a plan that works well on so many levels.

Congratulations, Will. Your plan for Maker Faire Detroit worked like a charm.

More men join the ranks of Former Eagle Scout

Image
On Monday, I published a letter from my husband, Christopher Baker, to the Boy Scouts of America. In that letter, Baker returned his hard-earned Eagle Scout award and explained that he no longer wanted to be associated with an organization that discriminated against gay teenagers and GBLT parents. By the end of the day, I'd posted six updates to that story—adding letters from other Eagle Scouts who had joined my husband in resigning from a fraternity they had loved and had worked incredibly hard to join.

The Boy Scouts of America is a private organization. The Supreme Court has said they have the right to discriminate. What these Eagle Scouts are saying is that legal precedent doesn't make the discrimination right. Overwhelmingly, they've said that it makes them sad to see the organization that meant so much to them go against the very values of inclusion that it taught them as children. As Baker wrote, "banning openly gay scouts and leaders is not a neutral position a…

How to Do Big Things

Image
If you want to change the world, follow a dream, or otherwise find your own identity, you need to be able to do big things.
In addition to being a prerequisite for growth, doing big things is also a lot of fun. But how do you do them? What steps do you take?
Thankfully, much of the work required to do big things relates to the mindset of deciding to do them. With that in mind, consider these suggestions for your own pursuit of meaning and adventure.
Do not model your definition of big things on what other people have done. This is why your big things are YOUR big things. If something matters to you, that’s all that matters. Decide for yourself: a) what the big things are, and b) how you’ll determine the success or act of accomplishing the big things. You decide. You be the judge.
An old-but-good standard for determining whether to pursue a big thing comes from thinking about long-term regrets. Twenty years from now, will you regret not attempting a big thing? If the answer is yes, or e…

Byzantium, a bootable Linux with "Ad-hoc wireless mesh networking for the zombie apocalypse"

Image
The Doctor [412/724/301/703] [ZS] sez, "Project Byzantium is a working group of the HacDC hackerspace, and is a live distribution of Linux for easily and rapidly deploying ad-hoc wireless mesh networks for the purpose of emergency communications. They presented last weekend in New York City at HOPE Number Nine and announced their second major release (v0.2a) on stage. They also gave away 500 copies on CD-ROM at the conference. They held workshops all weekend on how to use and test Byzantium Linux, and now they've released the .iso image of this release to the Internet.

(Thanks, The Doctor [412/724/301/703]!)

Using USB Foot Pedals With a Standing Desk

Image
NYC Resistor’s Trammell Hudson is using Midi effects pedals to create keyboard events like cutting and pasting.

I’ve recently switched to a standing desk from Geek Desk and wanted to be able to free my hands for more important things, like drinking coffee. The foot pedals are a cast off Behringer FCB1010 MIDI foot controller, which outputs events as MIDI messages. To make it work with any computer without requiring additional software, I wrote a combination MIDI to USB HID mouse and keyboard converter that runs on a Teensy 2.0.
The Teensy translates the pedal events into various mouse or keyboard events (Escape to return to command mode in vi, Shift-Insert to paste the X11 cut buffer, mouse wheel events for the pedals, etc). Full source is available to build your own and configure your own mappings. Read on for some details on the hardware interface.
